Introduction
Next to O Carreiro beach, this site brings together 18 centuries of history in layers: a Roman salting factory and villa, a Visigothic church, and a large necropolis.
Description
The storms of 1968 uncovered bones on the beach. Subsequent excavations brought to light several eras, one on top of the other:
- A salting factory and a Roman villa by the sea.
- A Visigothic-era church.
- A necropolis used until the 18th century, with more than 3,000 burials and stone sarcophagi.
- Remains of a medieval defensive tower against attacks from the sea.
Here an altar to the god Deverius, a possible marine deity, appeared, as well as a coin of Fernando II with the boat carrying the body of the Apostle Santiago, perhaps its oldest representation. It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2022.
- Visit: the enclosure is fenced and can be seen from the outside. Next to the church of San Vicente there is an interpretation room with panels, a model, and a replica of the coin.
- Route: PR-G 115 «Ruta do Adro Vello», circular, about 3 km.
